Anna Pepper

Lead Landscape Designer & Director

An experienced landscape designer, Anna Pepper Design Studio was born out of Anna’s love of being in nature and a drive for creative problem solving.

With a passion for plants with personality, visual humour, architectural foliage and textural interest, she is guided by nature’s adaptions. Anna has a reputation for strong, clean designs with a powerful visual impact that not only stand the test of time but improve with time. Creating a unique and functional garden that holds a special place in the owner’s hearts is at the forefront of Anna’s work.

Her practice often extends beyond the studio walls through tutorial assistant and providing apprenticeships and mentoring for Unitec landscape design graduates.

Outside of her busy work life, she is an adventure racer and supporter to an active, sports mad family and mountain bike loving dog.

  • For Anna, maintenance is always a key consideration. She believes soil improvement, drainage and orientation are the foundation to an enduring designed landscape. Anna utilises plants to bring personality, joy and soul to the garden for an all-year-round beautiful landscaped outlook. Whether it is floral blooms, coloured foliage or the bare sculptural structures of deciduous species. Incorporating water savvy, drought tolerant varieties, both NZ natives and exotics is a key consideration for Anna when she is designing client’s gardens.

  • As Anna’s mid-century modernist design idol Thomas Church once said “Gardens are to be lived in “. Anna’s intention is to create meaningful spaces that clients can enjoy with others and find private solace. Success is a designed landscape that enriches the environment and improves properties, amenity and emotional value. When designing a space, focal points are a must for Anna. She loves to include multiple features with a functional and visual purpose and to create rhythm in garden spaces through the use of scale and repetition.

  • Anna loves hardy, not-so-needy-plants with personality and humour.

Maya Moyes

Landscape Designer

An experience Landscape Designer, Maya’s creative flair and pragmatic approach to design delivers thoughtful, timeless garden spaces that not only look beautiful but also meet our client’s practical requirements for day to day living.

Maya discovered her love for gardening when moving into her first family home and mastering the art of what it took to bring a space to life, and the delight of watching it change throughout the seasons.

Now, as a certified landscape designer, Maya delivers exceptional design concepts through her experience in CAD and her attention to detail is what enables her to consistently exceed clients’ expectations.

In her spare time you’ll either find Maya exploring new hiking spots, dreaming about her next travel destination or trialling new cuisines.

  • Despite having a great love of plants, Maya’s first thought is to get the hardscaping right. The built structures will truly stand the test of time and must be timeless and functional. Using CAD extensively is an important part of her process for ensuring that scale, proportion and space are correctly designed.

When it comes to planting, Maya selects plants that will thrive in the soil, sun and ecological conditions. Her planting plans are backed with extensive research and take into consideration seasonal interest, focal points and appealing spaces, resulting in a cohesive design that speaks to the homeowners’ taste and the home's architecture.

  • Maya’s design style would best be described as classic contemporary. She loves elegant gardens that bring a sense of peace and a feeling of sanctuary for homeowners. Maya’s design goal is to make a space that transitions and functions effectively but that feels precious and intimate.

Her personal style best reflects her design icons; Charlotte Rowe, Ian Barker, Paul Bangay and Lee Gray for their unifying theme of structural sophistication paired with luscious plants.

  • Muehlenbeck Astonii because it gets so many things right with its divaricating branches, funky colour and it serves a great ecological functions. It can also be effectively pruned into great shapes.

Sarah Wilson

Landscape Designer

Sarah’s gardens are always created with an imagination and a care that fully reflects what clients want for their garden. She takes time to understand the ideas, desires and needs, to deliver beautiful yet functional garden spaces to their full potential.

Turning a hobby into a career, Sarah has a certification in Permaculture Design and a Landscape Design Diploma. Nothing goes unnoticed by Sarah when she attends any garden landscape. She understands how different spaces, both built and natural landscapes can contribute to overall health and wellbeing and uses this ability to incorporate these benefits into her designs.

When she’s not creating magic in our client’s gardens, you’ll find Sarah experimenting in her own garden or getting crafty with art projects such as her own earrings, sewing or knitting.

  • Sarah’s goal is to create gardens that people want to walk through barefoot. Her belief is that gardens can contribute to a better world and healthier, more connected communities. Her practical experience as both a gardener and a designer, guides her design process, from how a garden will be cared for to how the plants will grow and work together overtime with an overall benefit to the environment and biodiversity.

  • Relaxation and minimalistic designs is at the core of Sarah’s design style. She appreciates the unique designs of Japanese gardens for their ability to exude a feeling of peace, calmness and serenity. Where possible, she focuses on incorporating native plants as well as beneficial plants to increase biodiversity. Sarah’s belief is that gardens should be both beautiful and usable and be for everyone, so you’ll often find Sarah incorporating different zones, and ones that have different themes, feelings and moods.  Right now, she is loving Australian designer Ascher Smith who focuses on soft planting, natural curves and bold yet minimal changes that make a big impact.

  • Hedged Carpodetus serratus –Putaputaweta, for its delicate leaves and branches that give a soft yet structural look. When contrasted with bright colours like the Pohutukawa flower, it really stands out.
